Buying an electric car is a little different from buying a conventional car. The decision is not only about the design, features or the number on the price tag. Charging, battery capacity, range, service support and your everyday driving habits all have a role to play.
This becomes even more important when you are considering one of the upcoming electric cars in India and are being asked to place a booking before the vehicle is available for regular deliveries. A booking can secure your interest in a model, but it should not replace proper research.
Before you put down your money, here are some questions worth asking.
What exactly am I booking?
Start with the basics. Is the booking for a specific variant, or does it simply register your interest in the model?
Ask which variant, battery configuration and equipment level the booking applies to. This matters because specifications can differ between variants. For example, the VF 6 is listed with three variants: Earth, Wind and Wind Infinity. The published specifications include a 59.6 kWh usable battery, CCS2 charging and different power outputs depending on the version.
You should also ask whether the booking amount is refundable, transferable or adjustable against the final purchase price. Get the terms in writing rather than relying solely on a verbal explanation.
What is the final price I should budget for?
The advertised starting price is only one part of the calculation. Ask for the expected on-road price for the exact variant you are considering.
Find out what is included and what is charged separately. Registration, insurance, accessories and other applicable costs can affect the final amount.
If you are comparing upcoming EV cars in India, compare models on their final ownership cost rather than simply looking at their introductory prices.
Also ask whether the price is fixed for your booking or can change before delivery. If there is a possibility of a price revision, understand how it will affect your booking.
What range can I realistically expect?
Range is one of the most important questions for any EV buyer, but the certified figure should be treated as a reference rather than a guarantee of what every driver will achieve.
Ask about the certification standard used for the claimed range and understand how your driving pattern may affect it. City traffic, highway speeds, air-conditioning use, passenger load and driving style can all influence energy consumption.
For example, the VF 6 specifications currently list a range of up to 468 km for one configuration, while another listed configuration has a range of 463 km.
The right question is therefore not simply, “How many kilometres does it give?” Ask whether that range comfortably covers your usual daily commute and occasional longer journeys.
How quickly can I charge it?
Charging time can have a bigger impact on daily convenience than the headline range.
Ask what charging hardware the vehicle supports, the maximum AC and DC charging rates, and how long it takes to charge within the range you are likely to use.
The VF 6, for instance, uses a CCS2 charging port, supports AC charging of up to 7.2 kW and DC charging of up to 100 kW. Its listed fast-charging time is 25 minutes for 10% to 70%.
Also ask about home charging. If you live in an apartment, check whether installation is permitted and whether your parking space has suitable electrical access. For an independent house, find out what installation requirements apply.
Where will I charge the car?
This question should be answered before booking, not after taking delivery.
Think about where the car will spend most of its time. If it is parked at home overnight, home charging could become the most convenient option. If home charging is difficult, public charging availability becomes much more important.
Check the charging options along routes you regularly use, especially if you frequently travel between cities. It is also worth asking whether the manufacturer provides assistance with charger installation or information about compatible charging locations.
What battery warranty and vehicle warranty are included?
An EV has fewer moving mechanical parts than a conventional internal combustion car, but the battery remains a major component of the vehicle.
Ask specifically about the warranty period and coverage for the battery, electric motor and other major EV components. Do not assume that the battery warranty is identical to the standard vehicle warranty.
You should also clarify what conditions apply to warranty coverage and whether scheduled maintenance is required to keep the warranty valid.
What does routine maintenance involve?
One common reason people consider an EV is the prospect of simpler mechanical maintenance. However, that does not mean an electric car requires no servicing.
Ask what the scheduled service intervals are and which components are checked or replaced during routine maintenance.
Brake components, tyres, suspension, air-conditioning systems and other vehicle systems still require attention. Software and electronic systems may also form part of the ownership experience.
A clear understanding of maintenance requirements will help you estimate the actual cost of keeping the vehicle for several years.
Where can I get the car serviced?
A good vehicle is only part of the ownership equation. Service accessibility matters too.
Ask where the nearest authorised service facility is and how service support works if you travel to another city. If you are considering an upcoming EV, check what support is already available in your area rather than assuming that a service centre will be nearby.
It is also worth asking about roadside assistance, repair turnaround times and the process for handling an immobilised vehicle.
What safety and driver-assistance features are included?
Do not treat safety equipment as a checklist of impressive-sounding features. Ask what is included in the variant you intend to buy.
The VF 6, for example, is listed with Level 2 ADAS, along with features such as electronic parking brake and auto hold.
Ask whether these systems are standard or variant-specific and, importantly, experience them during a test drive. Driver-assistance features can behave differently from what you expect, so understanding how they work is useful before committing.
Does the vehicle suit my family and daily routine?
Specifications only tell part of the story. Spend time inside the vehicle.
Check whether the driving position works for you, whether rear passengers have enough space and whether the boot can accommodate the luggage you normally carry.
The VF 6, for instance, has a listed boot capacity of 423 litres, a 2,730 mm wheelbase and 190 mm of ground clearance.
If you need a larger vehicle, seating capacity should also be considered carefully. The Limo Green, for example, is specified as a seven-seater with a 2,840 mm wheelbase, 180 mm ground clearance and 512 km MIDC Part 1 + Part 2 cycle range.
These figures are useful, but sitting in the vehicle and checking the practical space is still essential.
What happens if my plans change after booking?
Finally, understand the booking terms before making the payment.
Ask about cancellation, refund timelines, variant changes, delivery allocation and any conditions attached to the booking. If you are financing the car, also clarify what happens if your loan is not approved or if the final price differs from your original estimate.
A booking should give you clarity, not create uncertainty.
Make the booking only when the answers make sense
An EV booking is easier to justify when you have looked beyond the excitement of a new model. Range, charging, battery warranty, service access, space, safety equipment and the final cost all deserve attention.
The best EV for your needs is not necessarily the one with the longest claimed range or the most features. It is the one that fits your driving routine, charging access and budget without requiring major compromises.
So, before putting down a booking for an upcoming electric car, take the time to ask the uncomfortable questions too. Once you know how the vehicle will fit into your everyday life, the booking decision becomes much easier to make with confidence.
